The city of Changning is located in the Baoshan region of Yunnan province south of the Langcang (Mekong) River, where I led a tea expedition from 2016 to 2018. Countless old Camellia Taliensis tea trees grow on both banks of the river. It is a species different from the Chinese tea tree Camellia sinensis, which can be observed by the morphology and structure, as well as the oxidative and sensory properties of the leaves. These oxidize very quickly, which is why black tea is often made from it. And so it is in this case as well.
You are looking at tea made from old “da chashu” 大茶树 trees, estimated to be 500 to 1000 years old. Black tea from these trees in its dry state resembles oatmeal with plum jam. The tea has a pronounced sweet taste with subtle fruity notes. I recommend preparing it for at least one-minute infusions.
