A.Š. Gaiwan Wood fired 215#2

“Gai-wan” is translated from Chinese as “cup – bowl”. In the tea world, we often come across this term because it represents one of the traditional Chinese tea vessels for preparing tea. Its volume is usually around 1.5-2 dcl, but in the city of Chaozhou, for example, small gaiwans of up to 100 ml are traditionally used. This one, on the other hand, is tall and bulky. In the porcelain city of Jingdezhen, I first encountered a gaiwan of a similar size to this one. And such a volume can only be found very hard. This Gaiwan was fired in a wood-fired oven where the firing temperature reaches 1280-1300°C. Its surface is partially covered with a glaze reminiscent of the “shino” style, and partially fire-beaten to a shard. The interior is completely glazed, so it is suitable for preparing any kind of tea. This gaiwan has a larger volume than usual gaiwans. I have personal experience with large gawans from China, in which tea can be prepared for even 5-6 people.
